Presenting: “Obsolescence” An Abridged Game Design Document

Posted by

This post is the culmination of a semester’s worth of work on my very first Game Design Document, and is a selection of highlights from my original concept: “Obsolescence” a game inspired by titles like Dark Souls. The original document is a little over 19 thousand words and 52 pages long, but here I’m posting just some specific sections that I’ve trimmed down heavily.

This is one of two short stories I wrote that take place in the world I’ve built. This one is titled “Things Forgotten” and is centered around the shadow to the game’s hero, a non-human entity known as The Collector.

Attached here are three different Cinematic Scripts depicting the opening of the game, an expository scene with an old man named Abram, and one of the game’s possible endings.

These are two different Quest Docs depicting quests centered around two of the game’s different NPCs. One of them is an engineer/hacker named Alexandra, and the other is a wandering merchant named Shaya, whose past is reminiscent of the player’s current situation.

Finally, this is a trimmed down game design document that explains the basic systems of the game, how the locations look/flow together, and other misc. info about the combat, different narrative branches and more. It’s about 20 pages, and saved as a word doc in order to preserve the original formatting.
